AOUG Conference June 17-18, 2024

Participation in this year's Austrian Oracle Usergroup – focus of our presentation on “Data Management Today and Tomorrow”

Visual of the AOUG User Conference 2024

Sphinx was once again represented at this year's AOUG conference – as in previous years, it was an exciting and interesting professional exchange that we naturally did not want to miss. Thomas Petrik, Head of Technology Consulting at Sphinx, gave a presentation on the topic of “Data Management Today and Tomorrow: A Pragmatic Journey Through the Jungle of Terminology”.

He began by discussing the 4 pillars of data management:

  • Data architecture: system architecture, provision and data flows, historisation and data storage, reporting architecture
  • Data security: authorization concept, physical and operational security, GDPR compliance
  • Data governance: organization (data governance board), documentation (business glossary), data quality management (DQM)
  • ICS (internal control system): Control processes

The focus of the rest of the presentation was on data governance. Thomas Petrik first highlighted the different roles such as data governance officer, data owner and data stewards. The tasks and objectives of the data governance board were also discussed in detail. A business glossary with basic information, contextual information, data classification and GDPR information is also necessary for sufficient documentation.

In terms of data quality, the factors of accuracy, consistency, integrity and availability are of crucial importance. For data quality management to work, the objectives must therefore first be defined and appropriate measures (rules, reporting, ad hoc corrections) and processes must then be set up.

Reproducible Reporting & Historisation

Among other things, it should be noted that any corrective measures must not affect the reproducibility of reporting under any circumstances – the keyword here is historisation.

You can find more information on the topic of historisation – all about master data, event data, the SCD dilemma (Slowly Changing Dimensions), the BSK (Business Surrogate Key) and technical historisation in the presentation for download.
